Path 1 to recognition as an MT-R
The knowledge examination (Kenntnisprüfung) for MT-R
The knowledge examination is a state test with which you make up the differences identified in your Defizitbescheid (deficit notice). It is the usual path to Anerkennung (recognition) for professionals from outside the EU — the alternative is the adaptation course. Its legal basis is the Act on the Medical Technology Professions (MTBG) and its examination regulation (MTAPrV).
What parts does it consist of?
It checks whether your competencies correspond to the level of an MT-R trained in Germany. Not your entire training is examined, but rather the areas that your authority sets out in the Defizitbescheid. The examination has two parts:
1
Areas of competence
Which areas are examined is set by your Defizitbescheid. Typical contents for MT-R:
- Radiological diagnostics and imaging procedures
- Performing radiographs (preparation, execution, and follow-up)
- Evaluation of the images (radiological anatomy, imaging criteria)
- Radiation protection and safety
- Assessment of one's own procedure (self-reflection)
2
Practical test at the center
- Carried out at a suitable center (hospital/practice)
- Two to four tasks typical of the profession
- Each task, at most 120 minutes
- Assessed by two examiners — one from the school and one from practice
- You demonstrate your skills directly in front of the team and the procedure
3
Oral test
- Examination conversation on the defined areas of competence
- You explain and justify your technical procedure
- Complements the practical part
Passing and deadline: the examination is passed when both the practical and the oral part have been passed. As a rule, you take it within six months of your authority's decision. The MTBG and the MTAPrV always apply, as well as the specific instructions in your Defizitbescheid.
