Why recognition is necessary

Since January 2023, the MT-Berufe-Gesetz (MTBG, the German act governing medical technology professions) regulates the medical technology professions in Germany. The title "MTR" is protected by law: only those who hold state authorization may practice independently. That is why foreign qualifications go through an equivalence assessment — resulting either in full recognition or a Defizitbescheid (deficit notice).

The main steps at a glance

Kenntnisprüfung or Anpassungslehrgang?

With a Defizitbescheid there are two paths: the Kenntnisprüfung (Kenntnisprüfung — a practical-oral knowledge exam, the faster route) or the Anpassungslehrgang (Anpassungslehrgang — an adaptation course of 3 to 12 months, compatible with working). Which one suits you is explained in our comparison: read it here.

Estimate time and costs realistically

Plan realistically for 8 to 14 months from the application to your first day of work. There are costs for administrative fees and certified translations. As a participant in the MyGermanWay program, the path is free for you — including the German and Fachsprache (specialized medical German) courses.

Frequently asked questions

Can I work before full recognition? Yes — with a Berufserlaubnis auf Zeit (temporary work permit, max. 2 years) you can work under supervision.

What level of German do I need? For the application, at least B2; for the exam, specialized medical language as well.
